Flight attendant injured after gunfire hits Spirit Airlines flight in Haiti: Report

WASHINGTON (AA) - A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Port-au-Prince, Haiti was struck by gunfire Monday as it attempted to land in the Haitian capital, said a report.

The plane was diverted to the Dominican Republic, where it landed safely, according to the Miami Herald.

A flight attendant was grazed by a bullet, sources told the Herald.

The company said confirmed in a statement, circulated by multiple outlets, that one flight attendant on board reported minor injuries and is being evaluated by medical personnel.

It said no guest injuries were reported.

The gunfire forced officials at Toussaint Louverture International Airport to ground all commercial flights, causing significant disruptions. In the aftermath, all US-based carriers, including American Airlines from Miami International Airport, canceled flights to Port-au-Prince for Tuesday.

The shooting occurred just hours before Haiti’s presidential council was set to swear in new Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime, who replaced Prime Minister Garry Conille in an executive order issued Sunday and published early Monday.

Haiti has been grappling with a wave of gang violence in recent years, worsened by the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.
