France, Spain condemn attempted coup in Benin, urge respect for constitutional order

ISTANBUL (AA) - France and Spain on Monday condemned the attempted coup d’état in Benin on Dec. 7, joining regional organizations in calling for a rapid restoration of constitutional rule.

France said it “condemns the attempted coup d’état that took place in Benin” and aligned itself with statements from the African Union and ECOWAS, stressing the need to uphold the constitutional order and ensure the normal functioning of state institutions.

Paris said it is “mobilised to ensure the safety of the French community present in Benin,” urging French nationals to exercise “the utmost caution” as the situation evolves.

Spain issued a similar statement, voicing “strong condemnation of the attempted coup in Benin” and demanding the “immediate restoration of the democratic and constitutional order.”

Madrid reaffirmed its commitment to democracy in the West African nation and said it hopes for a “swift return to institutional normality.”

The Spanish government said it is closely monitoring the security of its citizens through its Embassy in Abuja and its Consulate General in Lagos, which are “taking appropriate measures in line with developments.”

Regional leaders have also denounced the attempted coup, which Benin’s authorities say was quickly contained, prompting calls for calm and for all actors to avoid further destabilization in a country long considered one of West Africa’s more stable democracies.
