PARIS (AA) – A man was sentenced to 12 months in prison by a local court in the northern French city of Beauvais for painting racist graffiti on the facade of a local mosque.

A court ruled on Friday against the person who wrote racist messages on the facade of the Hamza mosque and a shop's wall, French press reported.

The court sentenced the man to 12 months in prison but suspended his sentence for six months and ordered his psychological treatment.

He was also banned from going to the mosque.

Beauvais prosecutor Frederic Trinh said the perpetrator was also barred from possessing weapons.

In December, the perpetrator wrote "monkey" in red on the wall of the Hamza mosque.

Beauvais Mayor Franck Pia expressed support for the city's Muslim community and condemned the act as contrary to French values.
