German retail sales rise 2.7% in 2025
Online trade and mail order sales remain main source of growth in retail sector

ISTANBUL (AA) - Retail sales in Germany increase 2.7% in 2025 compared to the previous year, despite a general economic slowdown.
The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) releases preliminary data showing the retail sector approaches the levels of 2021, when all-time sales records were broken.
The main source of growth in the sector is online trade and mail order sales, which increase 10% year-on-year in 2025.
The double-digit increase is largely driven by the inclusion of previously unrecorded data from a global online retailer's German operations in the system.
On a sectoral basis, non-food product sales rise 3.7%, while food retailing also grows 1.1% despite high price pressures.
Retailers in Germany also close the Christmas season, the most critical period of the year, with an increase.
The sector's December 2025 sales rise 3.2% on a yearly basis; however, this figure remains 4% below the historic peak of December 2021.
