BERLIN (AA) - Germany has approved the sale of IRIS-T missiles to Saudi Arabia, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s spokesman said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said the delivery of IRIS-T air-to-air guided missiles to Saudi Arabia has been approved by the Federal Security Council.
He said the missiles can be fired from fighter jets for the purpose of destroying drones, rockets or other projectiles.
German news magazine Der Spiegel said the government decided to resume arms deliveries to Saudi Arabia, and approved the sale of 150 IRIS-T air-to-air guided missiles to the kingdom.
The government changed its policy due to Saudi Arabia’s stance on Israel-Hamas war, and its contribution to Israel’s security by intercepting and destroying missiles fired from Yemen by Houthi rebels, according to the magazine.
