Germany arrests British Embassy worker accused of spying for Russia

BERLIN (AA) – German police have arrested an employee of the British Embassy on charges of spying for Russia, authorities said on Wednesday.

The British national, identified only as David S., was taken into custody in the city of Potsdam on Tuesday, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Investigations have revealed that the accused was in contact with a member of Russia’s intelligence service since at least November 2020, and gave some documents to the Russians in return for an unknown amount of cash, according to prosecutors.

Investigators have searched the man’s home and office, the statement said, adding that the arrest was the result of a joint investigation by German and British authorities.
