BERLIN (AA) - Germany’s chancellor on Saturday has called on newly industrialized countries like China and India to support a newly founded climate fund for the world’s most vulnerable countries.

Addressing the UN climate summit in Dubai, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said climate change remains the world’s biggest challenge, and countries should step up their efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F).

He underlined the particular “responsibility” of the world’s most advanced and newly industrialized countries and said with the foundation of a new fund, they would like to support the most vulnerable countries hit by climate disasters.

“As Germany, we will contribute to this fund with $100 million, and another $100 million will be made available by our host nation, the United Arab Emirates,” Scholz said, adding that they would do their best for the success of the Loss and Damage Fund.

“The responsibility also lies with the countries whose prosperity has grown enormously in the last three decades, and which today are responsible for a large proportion of global emissions. We also need their support,” he added.
