BERLIN (AA) – Germany has decided to extend its military presence in Iraq until the end of January 2026.
Announcing the decision, deputy government spokesperson Wolfgang Buchner said the German military mission in Iraq aims to help Iraqi security forces in their fight against the terrorist group Daesh/ISIS and in ensuring stability in the country.
Noting that Berlin's decision came at the request of the Iraqi government, he said Germany will continue to contribute to the NATO Mission in Iraq and the US-led Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve against Daesh/ISIS or whichever security missions would take over in the future.
Germany’s parliament is expected to discuss and ratify the decision next week.
