Germany issues travel alert for Israel amid heightened regional tensions

Security situation in region is ‘increasingly volatile’ and that escalation could lead to security-related incidents ‘without warning,’ warns Foreign Ministry

BERLIN (AA) - Germany on Friday updated its travel and safety advice for Israel amid heightened regional tensions.

“Travel to Israel and East Jerusalem is strongly discouraged,” said the Foreign Ministry’s website.

It also warned that the security situation in the region is “increasingly volatile” and that an escalation could lead to security-related incidents “without warning.”

Previously, this advice only applied to the area around the Gaza Strip and northern Israel. For Israel, the Foreign Ministry merely advised against “non-essential travel.”

In recent weeks, the US has reinforced its military presence in the region and signaled the possibility of military action to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear and missile programs and curb “its regional allies.”

Tehran has accused Washington and Israel of fabricating pretexts for intervention and regime change, and has warned it would respond to any military attack, even if limited, while insisting that sanctions relief must accompany any restrictions on its nuclear program.
