Germany may not fulfil its pledges to NATO, leaked report says
Army’s military equipment problems, personnel shortage may impede fulfilment of Berlin’s NATO obligations, according to report
BERLIN (AA) – Germany may not be able to fulfil some of its pledges to NATO by 2025, according to a leaked report published on Tuesday.
Mass-selling newspaper Bild published details of a 14-page report prepared by Lt. Gen. Alfons Mais, the chief of the German Army, about the current problems of the military.
He reportedly informed Chief of Defense Carsten Breuer that while Germany promised NATO to set up a mechanized division by 2025, which will be able to mobilize within 30 days, it would not be possible to fully achieve this goal due to personnel shortage and military equipment problems.
Mais also warned that there has been a “noticeable reduction in the army’s operational readiness” after years of underinvestment and due to new responsibilities, such as sending weapons and ammunition to Ukraine from the army’s stocks.
He called for a significant increase in defense budget to address the shortcomings of the armed forces.
