Germany reports highest daily COVID-19 cases

With 813 fatalities in 24 hours, death toll hits nearly 25,000

ANKARA (AA) – Germany on Friday reported 33,777 COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day rise since the start of the pandemic.

Some 1.43 million people have been infected with the virus in the country so far with the latest additions, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

COVID-19 also claimed 813 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 24,938.

The country reported the highest single-day death toll on Wednesday with 952.

Today’s daily cases make up the highest single-day rise in Western Europe.

As Germany recorded its worst figures to date, the country entered a stricter lockdown on Wednesday, closing non-essential shops, schools, and daycare providers.

Restaurants and cafes will offer takeaway services only, at least until January.

Private social gatherings are limited to a maximum of five people from two households.

Germany has the fifth-highest tally of coronavirus infections in Europe, behind France, Spain, the UK, and Italy.
