GENEVA (AA) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday ruled out sending any soldiers to Ukraine, saying NATO will not be a party to the war against Russia.

"NATO is not - and will not be - a war party," Scholz said in a video message shared on X.

"We do not want Russia's war against Ukraine to become a war between Russia and NATO," he said, adding that all allies agree on this.

"This also means no German involvement in the war! To put it bluntly: as German Chancellor, I will not send any soldiers from our armed forces to Ukraine," he underscored. "Our soldiers can rely on that."

Additionally, he said that what the Ukrainian army needs "most urgently now is more ammunition and more weapons, especially for air defense."

The chancellor noted that he has been campaigning "intensively" with partners for such assistance in recent weeks.

"Together, we are now providing more support for Ukraine," he added.
