Germany, Ukraine to sign ‘security assurances’ agreement

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy will sign bilateral agreement on ‘security assurances, long-term support’ for Kyiv, German government spokesman says

BERLIN (AA) - Germany and Ukraine will sign a bilateral security agreement on Friday, a German government spokesman said.

The security accord will be signed in Berlin, following a meeting of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Chancellor Olaf Scholz will host President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Federal Chancellery. As part of the talks, a bilateral agreement will be signed on security assurances and long-term support for Ukraine,” the spokesman said in a statement.

Zelenskyy’s visit comes at a time of growing concerns in Kyiv about the sustainability of US military support for Ukraine during an election year.

In recent weeks, Zelenskyy appealed to European allies for more support and warned that the Ukrainian army faces critical shortages of ammunition, especially artillery shells.

Germany is currently the second-largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the US.
