Germany urges Russia to stop 'military action' in Ukraine
Chancellor Scholz condemns Putin’s military move against Kyiv, says Germany will consult with EU and NATO allies
BERLIN (AA) – Germany has strongly condemned Russia's bombardment of Ukrainian cities and urged Moscow to cease its military intervention immediately.
“Russia must stop this military action immediately,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tweeted on Thursday morning after Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
“The Russian attack on Ukraine is a blatant breach of international law. Nothing can justify this,” he said.
“Germany strongly condemns this reckless act by President Putin. Our solidarity is with Ukraine and its people,” he added.
The attack, he said, was "a terrible day for Ukraine and a dark day for Europe."
Scholz stated that Germany will meet later in the day with its G7 and EU partners, as well as NATO allies, to discuss the latest developments and coordinated response to Russia's military move against Ukraine.
