ISTANBUL (AA) - New orders in the German manufacturing industry posted a rise of 7.8% on a monthly basis in December, despite market expectations, the federal statistical authority Destatis said on Thursday.

It followed an upwardly revised 5.7% rise in November, and defied market expectations of a 1.8% decline in December.

The surge in December stemmed from month-on-month increases in the manufacture of metal products (+30.2%) and manufacture of machinery and equipment (+11.5%).

"Large-scale orders were reported by several establishments operating in different areas of these two economic branches," Destatis said in a statement.

Orders in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+9.8%) and the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+5.7%) also had a positive impact on the overall result in December.

Orders for capital goods rose 10.5% in December 2025 compared to the previous month, while orders for intermediate goods increased 5.7%, while they dropped 5.3% for consumer goods.

Foreign orders also rose 5.6%, and orders from the Eurozone decreased 0.6%, while those from outside the Eurozone rose 9.7%, and domestic orders rose 10.7%.

Meanwhile, year-on-year, factory orders surged 13% in December.
