Germany’s far-right AfD grabs second place in polls

Chancellor Scholz’s Social Democrat Party falls behind far-right first time since 2021 elections

BERLIN (AA) - Germany’s far-right AfD party has risen to second place, one percentage ahead of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats, a new poll showed on Tuesday.

The anti-immigrant AfD gained three percentage points compared to the previous month and recorded a new high of 19% support, according to Forsa institute’s representative poll.

Scholz’s center-left Social Democrat Party (SPD) was at 18% in the latest poll, while his coalition partner the Greens were down to 14%. The junior coalition partner, the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), was at 7%.

The SPD has fallen behind the far-right AfD for the first time since 2021 elections, amid growing discontent with the government due to a cost of living crisis, surge in gas prices, and rising energy bills.

The conservative alliance of Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) was polled at 29% in the survey.
