BAGHDAD (AA) - The governor of Iraq’s central Karbala province was sacked Tuesday for alleged financial and administrative “violations" following a vote by Karbala’s provincial council.
Aqil al-Turaihi, a member of Iraq’s Islamic Dawa Party (led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki), has served as Karbala governor since June of 2013.
"The provincial council has voted to remove the governor from his post… for a number of financial and administrative violations," council member Mohammed Talqani told Anadolu Agency.
Of 27 council members, Talqani said, 14 had voted in favor of dismissing the governor.
Along with serving as head of Karbala’s Supreme Security Committee, the governor had also been responsible for overseeing the implementation of all service projects carried out in the province.
