ATHENS (AA) - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday reiterated the country’s ambition to be a green energy exporter.

Speaking at a panel discussion on green energy at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland’s winter resort town of Davos, he said: “In the short and medium term we want to become an exporter of green energy, taking advantage of the advantages we have, especially in terms of wind energy.”

He reiterated that Greece seeks to become a major energy provider through strong interconnections, pipelines, storage and liquefaction facilities.

“Our geographical position gives us this possibility,” Mitsotakis added.

The premier also argued that the EU should dismantle unnecessary bureaucratic procedures to attract more investments to the energy sector and hence stay competitive against its economic rivals, including the US.

Also speaking at the panel, the EU Commissioner for European Green Deal Maros Sefcovic stressed the importance of gaining popular support for the green transformation.

He maintained the EU should strongly be present in the field of future-oriented technologies, particularly in the green technologies such as production of electric vehicles and energy storage.
