Greece to launch tender for hydrocarbon exploration off Peloponnese, Crete Island

Move comes in response to interest from US-based energy giant Chevron

ATHENS (AA) - Greece will open an international tender for hydrocarbon exploration in the southern Peloponnese and south of Crete Island, the government announced Thursday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Environment and Energy said Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou has signed a decision to initiate the tender, aimed at both exploration and potential development of hydrocarbon resources in the designated offshore areas.

The move comes in response to interest from US-based energy giant Chevron.

The ministry said an international tender notice will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union for 90 days, during which companies can submit their applications.

Chevron had previously submitted a request to explore for hydrocarbons south of Crete, which the ministry welcomed in March.
