ATHENS (AA) - Greek main opposition party, SYRIZA, strongly condemned Israel's killing of seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen (WCK) in the Gaza Strip.

“SYRIZA Progressive Alliance strongly condemns the killing by the Israeli Defence Forces, of seven members of the humanitarian organisation World Central Kitchen that were delivering food to vulnerable people in Gaza, and we express our most sincere condolences to their loved ones,” said Rena Douru, the party’s head of international department, in a written response when asked by Anadolu about the party’s stance regarding the tragic attack.

“We are fully aligned with the Joint Statement of the EU High Representative and Commissioner for Crisis Management,” calling for “a swift implementation of the announced commitment by the Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability for those who are responsible,” she said.

Dourou said humanitarian workers are protected by international humanitarian law and full conformity of all members of the international community with its provisions is expected.

Reiterating the party’s robust concern about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza, she said: “The utterly condemnable illegal actions of Hamas, do not justify, by any means, the dire circumvention of international humanitarian law that we have been witnessing in Gaza.”

Finally, Dourou remarked, “SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance expresses its solidarity with the Palestinian people, and joins all rational actors in the international community in calling for full support to UN’s efforts for a lasting ceasefire that will include the return of all hostages and will allow the delivery of substantial amounts of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.”
