KOMOTINI, Greece / ISTANBUL (AA) – A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Greece’s Peloponnese region late Saturday, shaking the Kalavrita area and nearby towns, according to Greek media and seismological institutes.

The tremor, recorded at 2048GMT, was felt across parts of the western Peloponnese.

The University of Athens’ Geophysics-Geothermics Department said the epicenter was about 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) west-southwest of Kalavrita at a depth of 13 km (8.1 mi). It was also located 26.5 km (16.5 mi) south-southwest of Aigio and roughly 150 km (93.2 mi) west of Athens. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the quake at magnitude 4.8.

Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos told Greek media the region sits on a fault that produces frequent earthquakes but added that there are “no worrying signs at the moment.”

Efthimios Lekkas, who heads Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, said larger quakes had occurred there in the past and cautioned that it is too early to determine whether Saturday’s tremor was the main shock.

Authorities reported no damage or casualties.
