Greek farmers intensify protests, demand more state support
Climate change put extra pressure on agriculture sector in recent years, notes media report
ATHENS (AA) - Greek farmers escalated protests nationwide Wednesday, demanding greater state support, said media reports.
They are pressuring the ruling center-right New Democracy (ND) government through rallies, demonstrations and roadblocks, according to the To Vima newspaper.
The farmers want compensation for income losses caused by low production levels and declining earnings, it said. They are also urging the government to lower production costs by introducing tax-free fuel, a price cap on electricity and subsidies for fertilizers, agricultural supplies and livestock feed.
The newspaper noted that climate change has severely affected the agricultural sector, reducing output due to rising temperatures, drought and extreme weather.
