Greek main opposition party condemns wireless device explosions in Lebanon

ATHENS (AA) - Greece’s main opposition party, Syriza, on Thursday condemned a two-wave attack using wireless devices that exploded in Lebanon that has killed at least 37.

Syriza warned in a statement that the explosions will surely “lead to further dangerous escalation in the region with uncontrolled consequences to the detriment of international peace.”

“It is imperative that the international community take all the necessary initiatives in order for all parties involved to show the necessary restraint to avoid a generalized conflict,” it said.

Stressing that resolution on the long-lasing Palestinian issue remains key to defusing the crisis in the region, the party said, “It is therefore necessary to support the relevant UN initiatives for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, to address the humanitarian crisis and to restart credible negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, for a two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem the capital of Palestine.”

It added: “Otherwise, the risk of conflagration in the Middle East will continue to increase, with devastating consequences for regional stability and security.​”

Thousands of pagers exploded in Beirut and several areas across Lebanon on Tuesday, killing 12 people, including two children, and injuring 2,323 others. A second way of device blasts killed 25 and injured 608 on Wednesday.

There has been no Israeli comment on the blasts, which came amid an escalation in cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah since the start of Israel’s deadly onslaught against the Gaza Strip, which has killed nearly 41,300 victims, mostly women and children, following a cross-border attack by Hamas last Oct. 7.
