Greek opposition says just resolution of Palestinian issue must for peace

'Continued escalation of Israel's war against Lebanon creating conditions for wider conflagration in Middle East,' says opposition Syriza party

ATHENS (AA) – Greece’s main opposition left-wing Syriza party said on Wednesday that a just resolution of the Palestinian issue is urgent as the conflict that started in last October continues to escalate and expand.

“The continued escalation of Israel's war against Lebanon is creating the conditions for a wider conflagration in the Middle East with uncontrollable consequences and civilian casualties,” the party said in a statement.

Recalling its previous warning that “new regional war without rules with a large victimization of the civilian population is imminent with implications that go beyond the geographical boundaries of the Middle East,” the party underlined that UN General-Secretary Antonio Guterres' appeal for immediate ceasefire should urgently be heard.

“At the same time, the just resolution of the Palestinian issue on the basis of international law is urgent,” it said.

Meanwhile, in a video statement, Greek Communist Party head Dimitris Koutsoubos called for withdrawal of all support to the state of Israel.

Otherwise, he added: “The Greek government would assume huge responsibilities because it would lead our people into more dangerous adventures and makes our people the target of retaliation."

On Tuesday night, Iran carried out a major missile attack on Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, and an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander.

Regional tensions have escalated due to Israel’s brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has killed over 41,600 people, mostly women and children, following a Hamas attack last October.

The conflict spread to Lebanon with Israel launching deadly strikes across the country, which have killed more than 1,073 people and injured nearly 3,000 others since Sept. 23.
