Greek railway unions call for strike to protest insufficient security procedures

ATHENS (AA) – Greek railway unions called Monday for a strike to protest insufficient security measures in the country’s national rail system.

The SEP TRAINOSE and PEP TRAINOSE trade unions are demanding the immediate hiring of additional personnel, the replacement of old trains with modern ones, the implementation of the unions’ safety proposals for passengers and workers, the completion of infrastructure projects and transport safety in the railway network, according to a statement.

“The tragic accident in Tempe (in February 2023) which claimed the lives of 57 innocent people, including 11 of our colleagues, highlighted the longstanding issues faced by railway workers and the state’s abandonment of the railway system,” it said.

The 24-hour nationwide strike will take place on Thursday.
