KANO, Nigeria (AA) - Gunmen abducted about 10 students Thursday from the Federal University Lafia in Nasarawa state in north-central Nigeria, university spokesperson Abubakar Ibrahim confirmed to Anadolu.
He said the gunmen invaded the community housing for students, opposite the permanent site of the university and shot sporadically to scare residents.
The students were not living within the school but resided off campus.
Abubakar said the number of abducted students is yet to be ascertained.
Police spokesman Ramhan Nansel confirmed the abductions.
He said details of the kidnapping were still sketchy, but security operatives began an investigation.
The police official noted that the number of students abducted was yet to be ascertained.
Witness Joseph Adamu told Anadolu that when students heard the gunshots, they scampered for safety before gunmen succeeded in kidnapping 10 students.
Adamu said the gunmen had more than two hours without security intervention before they abducted the students.
In Nasarawa state, there have been frequent abductions of students from the university.
The state government, in collaboration with security agencies, had planned to forestall further attacks in the institution of learning but kidnappers still have carried out abductions.
