Hamas reiterates efforts to end Israeli aggression in Gaza

Palestinian resistance group emphasizes its openness to ‘serious and genuine initiatives to stop the aggression’ against Gaza

By Nour Abuaisha

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) - The Palestinian resistance group Hamas reaffirmed on Saturday its commitment to ending the ongoing Israeli offensive on Gaza, highlighting its significant efforts to engage positively with all initiatives aimed at halting the aggression.

In a statement marking the 37th anniversary of its founding, Hamas emphasized its openness to "serious and genuine initiatives to stop the aggression and crimes of the occupation against our people, while firmly adhering to the rights, principles, and aspirations of the Palestinian people."

Hamas did not directly address claims by the Israeli news outlet Walla that Tel Aviv had presented an updated proposal last week for releasing some of the approximately 100 Israeli captives held by Hamas, coupled with a cease-fire agreement.

According to the report, Israeli officials alleged that Hamas showed greater flexibility and a willingness to consider even a partial agreement.

Separately, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan claimed on Saturday that a hostage exchange deal between Hamas and Israel was imminent, though no official confirmation was made by either side.

In its statement, Hamas asserted that the Palestinian people have the "absolute right, capability, and free will to determine their future and organize their internal affairs independently," rejecting "any international or Zionist projects aiming to dictate Gaza's future in line with the occupation's interests."

Israel has launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 44,800 victims, mostly women and children, since an attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last month for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense chief Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on Gaza.
