Hezbollah targets newly established Israeli military site in southwestern Lebanon

Israel responds with artillery shelling, targeting various locations near Lebanese border

BEIRUT (AA) – Hezbollah said on Wednesday that its fighters had targeted a newly established Israeli military site near the southwestern Lebanon town of Naqoura.

The Lebanon-based group said in a statement that its fighters "targeted the Israeli military site with appropriate weapons," without providing further detail.

Israeli artillery shelled the outskirts of Naqoura, while alarm sirens sounded at the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the country's south, the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) said.

Sounds of intercepting missiles were heard in the area, it said, adding that Israeli artillery also targeted the forests of the town of Labouneh in the Naqoura region, extending to the forests of Dhayra and Yarine.

The Israeli army has also targeted Hamames Hill on the outskirts of Kfarkela town, with four artillery shells, as well as the suburbs of Ayta ash Shab town since early morning, the news agency said.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military radio reported on Wednesday that the army detected the launch of 18 missiles from Lebanon towards the Ras al-Naqoura area, noting that "eight of these missiles were intercepted."

No injuries or property damage have been reported, the Army Radio said.

Tensions have risen along the border between Lebanon and Israel, with intermittent exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in the deadliest clashes since the two sides fought a full-scale war in 2006.

The border tension comes amid an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.
