High heat in Northern Cyprus breaks nearly half-century of records

Thursday saw highest temperatures recorded for June since 1975, says weather office

ISTANBUL (AA) - Northern Cyprus faced extraordinary heat on Thursday, breaking nearly half-century-old temperature records, authorities said.

The North Cyprus meteorological office reported record highs in multiple regions. These figures mark the highest temperatures recorded in these regions for June since 1975, 49 years ago, when its official record-keeping began.

In the southeastern village of Beyarmudu, temperatures soared to 41.9C (107.4F), breaking the previous record of 41.5C (106.7F).

The district of Guzelyurt in the southwest suffered under a sweltering 45.5C (113.9F), shattering its old record of 43C (109.4F).

Gecitkale, where there is a military airfield, reached 44.8C (112.6F), up from its previous high of 43.5C (110.3F), and Camlibel in the country’s west reached 41.4C (106.5F), beating the previous peak of 41.3C (106.3F)
