Hong Kong: Thousands march over extradition bill

Ongoing demonstrations are expected to be largest since 2014

By Burak Bir

ANKARA (AA) - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Hong Kong on Sunday to protest the government’s controversial extradition bill, local media reported.

Protesters led-by the Civil Human Rights Front movement marched against proposed amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance which would allow suspected criminals to be sent to China for trial, reported daily South China Morning Post.

The ongoing demonstrations are expected to be the largest since pro-democracy Umbrella Movement rallies in 2014, where protesters used umbrellas to shield against pepper spray by police.

Sunday's demonstration saw people carrying umbrellas and banners saying "No extradition" through the streets.

Hong Kong is governed through a dual system under which the government oversees internal affairs but foreign policy and defense is decided by China.
