Hospitals on ‘high alert’ as flu cases in England hit record levels amid strike action
Flu admissions rise to highest ever for this time of year as NHS faces winter virus pressure and industrial action, according to health authority

LONDON (AA) - Hospitals in England are on “high alert” this week as they face industrial action alongside a continued surge in winter viruses, according to the latest figures from the health authority.
The data, covering the week up to Dec.14, shows flu cases in hospital reached 3,140 by the end of last week – the highest ever recorded for this point in the year and an 18% rise on the previous week.
Despite the increase, National Health Service (NHS) England said there were “welcome signs” that the rise in flu cases may be slowing.
It noted that hospital admissions linked to flu fell by 4% in the North West over the past week, suggesting the pressure may be easing in some areas.
The organization said the slowdown is believed to be the result of higher vaccination rates and the public taking extra steps to protect elderly and vulnerable people.
Flu has hit record levels for a second consecutive week, which may be linked to a mutated strain causing the virus to arrive earlier than usual this year.
In a statement, Health Secretary Wes Streeting thanked NHS staff for their efforts during the challenging period, saying their work continues to “keep the show on the road.”
He said: “Flu continues to put significant strain on the NHS, with record numbers of patients in hospital, and frontline services remaining under enormous pressure. I'm appealing to the public to protect yourself and your loved ones by getting your flu jab.
“The BMA's (British Medical Association’s) regrettable decision to pursue strike action at this critical moment is piling on the pressure, but the NHS team has responded brilliantly to keep the show on the road. Our entire focus is on keeping patients safe through the strikes and this peak period for the NHS.”
