ISTANBUL (AA) – Fourteen South Korean suspects accused of attacking the Seoul Western District Court faced their first hearing trial on Monday in the same courthouse, Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

The suspects are charged in connection with the riot they allegedly took part in on Jan. 19, when the court was attacked by supporters of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The mob attack came shortly after a formal arrest warrant was issued against Yoon Suk Yeol for his declaration of martial law on Dec. 3.

The suspects are facing charges of obstructing public officials in the performance of their duties, trespassing, and damaging public property.

All 14 suspects were present at the first hearing, and four of them also attended a later hearing to determine their bail.

Six of the defendants have denied all charges, while five have chosen to plead guilty but maintain they had no criminal intent.

Their combined legal team has urged the court to acquit them, saying that the suspects engaged in resistance against an "illegal act by a state institution.”
