India calls for dialogue in Venezuela

Foreign Ministry says people of Venezuela should hold dialogue to find political solution to resolve differences

ANKARA (AA) – India on Friday called for dialogue among stakeholders in Venezuela amid the ongoing political crisis in the oil-rich South American nation.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar told news website Wire: “[]...it is for the people of Venezuela to find a political solution to resolve their differences through constructive dialogue and discussion without resorting to violence.”

“We believe democracy, peace and security in Venezuela are of paramount importance for the progress and prosperity of the people of Venezuela,” Kumar said, adding that the two countries enjoyed “close and cordial relations”.

Venezuela has been rocked by protests since Jan. 10 when Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for a second term despite a vote boycott by the opposition.

On Wednesday, Venezuelan National Assembly President Juan Guaido declared himself president and called for mass anti-government protests that have filled city streets across the country.

Guaido was recognized by the U.S., Canada and several Latin American nations.

Maduro condemned the move, saying his country would cut relations with the U.S. and giving American diplomats 72 hours to leave the country.

Russia, China, Turkey and Iran have put their weight behind incumbent President Maduro.
