ANKARA (AA) - The Indian envoy to the United Nations has called for "reforms" to the UN Security Council, stating that the current global challenges necessitate a more representative Security Council.
Addressing an event in New York, Ruchira Kamboj emphasized that the issue has been a long-standing topic of debate and requires urgent attention.
"The reform of the United Nations Security Council... As we gather here, we are reminded of the world's evolving challenges and the pressing need for a council that is more representative, more inclusive and effective in maintaining global peace and security," she said in a video posted on Twitter.
Kamboj added that the current composition of the Security Council no longer aligns with the realities of their interconnected and multipolar world.
"The council's structure designed in a different era does not reflect the rise of new powers, the shifting geopolitical landscape and the aspirations of nations striving for a fairer and more equitable global order," she said.
Kamboj expressed the view that expanding the membership of the Security Council, both in the permanent and non-permanent categories, would enhance its legitimacy, credibility, and effectiveness.
