Air Force says militants attacked convoy in Jammu region
By Anadolu Staff
Ankara (AA) - An Indian Air Force personnel was killed and four others were injured in an attack on a convoy in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, it said Saturday.
“An Indian Air Force vehicle convoy was attacked by militants in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Air Force wrote on X.
“In the ensuing gunfight with terrorists, the Air Warriors fought back by returning fire,” five Indian Air Force personnel "received bullet injuries, and were evacuated to the nearest military hospital for medical attention," it said.
“One air warrior succumbed to his injuries later,” it said, adding that "further operations" are underway by security forces.
Disputed region
Kashmir, a Muslim-majority Himalayan region, is held by India and Pakistan in parts and claimed by both in full. A small sliver of Kashmir is also held by China.
Since they were partitioned in 1947, the two countries have fought three wars -- in 1948, 1965 and 1971 -- two of them concerning Kashmir.
Also, in the Siachen glacier in northern Kashmir, Indian and Pakistani troops have fought intermittently since 1984. A cease-fire took effect in 2003.
