Indian, Israeli premiers express concern over maritime traffic amid Houthi attacks in Red Sea

NEW DELHI (AA) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday "shared concerns" regarding the safety of maritime traffic in the Red Sea.

In a statement, the Indian government said Modi received a call from Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who briefed the Indian premier on the recent developments in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

“Prime Minister (Modi) reiterated the need for continued humanitarian aid for the affected population and emphasized an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict, including the release of all hostages, through dialogue and diplomacy,” the statement said. "The two leaders shared concerns regarding the safety of maritime traffic."

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have significantly stepped up their involvement in the current conflict in the Gaza Strip by targeting vessels in the southern Red Sea and warning of attacking all Israel-bound ships. The group said the attacks aim to support Palestinians as they face Israel's "aggression and siege" in Gaza.

The Red Sea is one of the world's most frequently used sea routes for oil and fuel shipments.

On Monday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the creation of a multinational mission under the name, Operation Prosperity Guardian to counter Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
