NEW DELHI (AA) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday slammed the newly formed opposition alliance likening it to the East India Company, which was responsible for colonizing the sub-continent.
"Merely forming an alliance named INDIA does not mean anything as the East India Company ... also had the word India," Modi said at a parliamentary meeting in Delhi.
Ahead of the general elections next year, 26 parties have formed an alliance with the acronym INDIA.
Responding to Modi's comment, the main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter: “Call us whatever you want, Mr. Modi. We are INDIA."
