Indian top court dismisses petitions against its ruling on Kashmir's special status, state removal

Last December, Supreme Court upheld federal government's 2019 move to revoke Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir's special status and recognition as state

Ankara (AA) – The top Indian court has dismissed review petitions, upholding its earlier ruling that endorsed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s decision to revoke the Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, as well as its recognition as a state.

The court heard arguments on numerous petitions challenging the legality of the federal government legislation in 2019.

“Having perused the review petitions, there is no error apparent on the face of the record... The review petitions are, therefore, dismissed,” a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court of India said in its order released on Tuesday.

Last December, the court upheld the legality of legislation passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on August 5, 2019, that stripped the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region of its recognition as a state, as well as its special status.

Following the government move, nearly 20 petitions were filed with the Supreme Court, calling the decision unconstitutional.
