ISTANBUL (AA) - A young woman was sentenced to death on Monday for murdering her boyfriend with a plant-based poison two years ago, local broadcaster NDTV reported.
Greeshma, a 24-year-old woman, had poisoned her 23-year-old boyfriend Sharon Raj in India’s southwestern province of Kerala to end their romantic relationship.
Greeshma plotted to kill Sharon because he did not want to end their relationship, even though her marriage to another man was arranged.
After being poisoned in 2022, Sharon died 11 days later from multiple organ failure.
A local court, which convicted Greeshma and her uncle for the murder last week, noted that the severity of the crime outweighed the need to consider the accused's age.
The defendant asked for leniency, citing her lack of criminal record, academic successes and the fact that she was her parents' only daughter.
The court rejected her plea for clemency and sentenced her to death.
The court said that the prosecution based its case on circumstantial, digital, and scientific evidence to prove the crime.
