NEW DELHI (AA) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks Tuesday with his Mauritian counterpart Navin Ramgoolam and reviewed bilateral relations, according to officials.

Modi is on a two-day state visit to Mauritius. He will be attending the country’s national day celebrations as chief guest on Wednesday.

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders met Tuesday evening and held "productive talks.”

“The leaders reviewed bilateral relations, ongoing collaborations and explored new avenues to elevate our special bond to even greater heights,” he said.

Modi affirmed that India “was proud to be a valued and trusted development partner” for Mauritius and “the two countries would work together for promoting the interests of the Global South,” Jaiswal said.

Separately, Modi described the meeting as excellent.

“Sectors that featured prominently in the talks between PM Ramgoolam and me included defense, security, economic linkages, cultural exchanges and more,” he wrote on X.

Modi also called on Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool, and the two leaders exchanged views on “deepening the special and close bilateral ties” between India and Mauritius, said the Foreign Ministry.

Ahead of the visit, Modi said he was confident that it “will build on the foundations of the past and open a new and bright chapter in the India and Mauritius relationship.”
