BALI, Indonesia (AA) - Indonesia's president on Wednesday urged the global community to exercise restraint after two people were killed when a missile landed in Poland, a NATO member.
"I call on all parties to remain calm and refrain from escalation of tensions. I always state that war will only bring devastation therefore we must stop the war," Joko Widodo said in a press conference after the G-20 summit.
Widodo stressed the G-20 forum is not a political one and that it should not be "swayed to a political one."
He also cited US President Joe Biden's statements on the incident in Poland and said "the missile is unlikely coming from Russia."
He noted that all G-20 members agreed that "the war has negative impact on global economy."
"The global economic recovery will not be achieved without peace," he added.
In the backdrop of renewed Russian strikes on Ukraine near its border with Poland, Tuesday's late night explosion took tensions between western countries and Russia a notch higher. Ukraine blamed Russia for the attack on Poland, an allegation Moscow rejected.
Later on Wednesday, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said the explosion was caused by Ukrainian air defense as it tried to block Russian missiles.
The 17th G-20 Leaders' summit was held on Nov. 15-16 under the team of Recover Together – Recover Stronger in Indonesia's Bali.
