Installed offshore wind energy up by 8-fold in a decade

Installed capacity globally reaches 63,300 megawatts

By Gulsen Cagatay

ANKARA (AA) - Installed offshore wind energy capacity has globally increased eightfold from 7,171 megawatts in 2013 to 63,300 megawatts by the end of 2022, with projects and investments implemented in 10 years.

According to data compiled by Anadolu from the Global Wind Energy Council and the online statistics portal Statista, the annual rise in installed wind energy capacity is expected to reach 25,000 megawatts worldwide.

As part of the fight against climate change, the last year saw an 8,800-megawatt increase in the installed capacity of offshore wind energy, with countries accelerating investments in recent years.

The target for the 2023-2027 period is to install 130 gigawatts of offshore wind energy.

While the offshore wind energy turbine capacity used worldwide is on average 8-10 megawatts, tests are underway to expand this capacity to 15 megawatts.

In the global electricity sector, developments in renewable energy technologies such as offshore wind energy, and increasing installed power contribute to employment, which would also reduce electricity prices as part of the goals.
