Iran cites legitimate defense against Israeli aggression

‘Due to UN Security Council failure to take appropriate steps against the Israeli regime's attacks and violations, Iran has no choice but to exercise its right to legitimate defense,’ says acting foreign minister

By Ahmet Dursun

TEHRAN (AA) - Iran's acting foreign minister said Wednesday that Tehran will exercise its right to a legitimate defense to counter Israel's aggression.

Ali Bagheri Kani spoke at an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia that was convened to address Israel's attacks on Palestinians and violations of Iranian sovereignty.

Bagheri criticized the UN Security Council for failing to curb Israel's regional aggression.

He cited an attack in April on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus and Washington’s subsequent blockage of diplomatic channels by preventing the Council from condemning Tel Aviv's actions. That, he said, forced Iran to resort to legitimate defense.

He also pointed to the Council’s inaction following Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

"Due to the UN Security Council's failure to take appropriate steps against the Israeli regime's attacks and violations, Iran has no choice but to exercise its right to legitimate defense," said Bagheri. "This action is necessary to prevent further attacks on Iran's sovereignty, citizens and territory, and it will be carried out at the necessary time and in an appropriate manner."

Bagheri said Haniyeh’s assassination was conducted with US approval and intelligence support, and Washington's role should not be ignored.

He urged OIC member states to condemn Israel's attacks on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional countries and affirm their support for Iran's right to legitimate defense.

Haniyeh was assassinated on July 31 after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president.

Hamas and Iran accused Israel of carrying out the assassination. Tel Aviv has not confirmed or denied responsibility.
