SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq (AA) - Iran and Iraq signed an agreement on Wednesday aimed at boosting security along their shared border, officials from both sides have said.

After a two-day meeting in Iraq’s city of Sulaymaniyah, military officials from Iran and Iraq announced that they had reached a deal on border security.

“Military officials responsible for the border provinces will jointly review and renew the protocol on a semi-annual basis,” Sherko Abdullah, a border official from northern Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), said.

Kayomarz Shaikhi, an Iranian border official responsible for the Kurdistan province, for his part, said: “We signed the deal with a view to ensuring the provinces located adjacent to Iraq.”

Iran and Iraq share a 1,450-kilometer border.
