TEHRAN, Iran (AA) - The Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee convened an emergency session on Saturday to discuss the recent Israeli attacks in the region, particularly focusing on Lebanon.

Committee spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei said in a statement that the session focused on "investigating the recent events in the region, including the crimes committed by the Zionist regime in the southern suburbs of Beirut."

Rezaei added: “The Zionists are witnessing their final days in the occupied territories, and these events in the region will mark the beginning of the end for the cursed and criminal Zionist regime."

This follows the Israeli army’s announcement on Saturday that it had "successfully" assassinated Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburb on Friday evening.

Hezbollah confirmed the killing of its leader later on Saturday.

Since Monday, Israeli airstrikes have ravaged Lebanon, killing nearly 800 people and injuring over 2,300, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. The ministry also reported that since last October, the death toll in Lebanon has reached 1,622, with 98,800 people displaced from the southern and eastern regions of the country.

Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in cross-border warfare since the Israeli military onslaught on Gaza on Oct. 7. The Gaza conflict has claimed the lives of nearly 41,600 people, mostly women and children.

The international community has expressed deep concern over Israel’s airstrikes on Lebanon, warning that they could turn the Gaza conflict into a broader regional war.
