TEHRAN, Iran (AA) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for immediate reforms in the decision-making structures of the United Nations and international financial institutions.
Speaking Monday at a session at UN Headquarters in New York on strengthening UN goals, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for multilateral cooperation to address current and future global challenges.
He highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of issues such as war, discrimination, poverty and hunger by strengthening the multilateral system.
No document can guarantee peace while children and civilians are being killed in Gaza, he said.
Pezeshkian also reiterated Iran's commitment to a nuclear-free world and called for the establishment of a region free of weapons of mass destruction without any preconditions.
Criticizing unilateral sanctions, he said that such measures hinder nations from achieving their development and prosperity goals.
He proposed that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres present a comprehensive report to the General Assembly on the impact of sanctions on affected countries.
Stressing the need for reforms within the UN's governance and international financial institutions, Pezeshkian called for the inclusion of developing countries in decision-making processes and the creation of a fair and accountable system to address their financial problems.
