BAGHDAD, Iraq (AA) – Five Daesh/ISIS militants were killed in an Iraqi security operation north of Baghdad, according to a local security officer on Saturday.
Police Captain Ahmed Khalaf told Anadolu Agency that a joint force from the Iraqi army and the Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization) Force shot dead five Daesh/ISIS suicide bombers in al-Tarmia district, north of Baghdad.
He said three members of the Hashd al-Shaabi were killed and two others injured in the operation.
According to the police officer, the dead militants were responsible for staging attacks against Iraqi security forces in al-Tarmia.
The Daesh/ISIS terror group is still active in areas north of Baghdad. Last month, the terrorist group claimed a twin bombing in Baghdad, which killed 32 people and injured dozens.
In June 2014, the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group captured Mosul, Salahuddin and Anbar provinces and parts of Diyala and Kirkuk, which have been recaptured from the group in late 2017 by the Iraqi forces with support from a US-led coalition.
The Iraqi army continues to carry out frequent operations against the group in these parts where the group has recently in 2020 mobilized its sleeper cells in rural areas.
