Iraqi warplanes strike Daesh 'headquarters' in N. Syria

Strikes are reportedly being carried out with approval of Damascus regime

BAGHDAD (AA) - The Iraqi Air Force has struck a major Daesh position in Syria’s northern Al-Hasakah province, Iraq’s Defense Ministry said Monday.

According to a ministry statement, Iraqi F-16s struck a “logistics headquarters” affiliated with the terrorist group south of Al-Hasakah’s town of Al-Dashisha.

The ministry did not provide any information regarding the extent of the damage or resultant casualties.

It was not the first time for the Iraqi military to strike Daesh positions in neighboring Syria.

On Apr. 19, Iraqi warplanes carried out a number of airstrikes against terrorist positions in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province.

Iraqi officials say the strikes are being conducted in coordination with -- and with the approval of -- the Syrian government.

Last December, officials in Baghdad declared that Daesh's military presence in Iraq had been all but dismantled following a disruptive three-year war.

Nevertheless, the terrorist group appears to still maintain an active presence in certain part of northern and western Iraq.
