ISTANBUL (AA) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani is set to visit Syria on Sunday, marking the first official visit to Damascus by an Iraqi premier in 13 years.
A statement by al-Sudani’s office said the prime minister left Baghdad on Sunday en route to the Syrian capital, Damascus, for an official visit.
The visit comes upon an invitation from the head of the Syrian regime Bashar al-Assad for talks on “prospects of bilateral cooperation and coordination to establish security and stability in the region,” the local Baghdad Today news website reported.
Former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was the last Iraqi premier to have visited Syria in 2010.
