AMMAN, Jordan (AA) - Jordan received from Israel the bodies of two Jordanians who were killed in a shooting on the Israeli-Jordanian border area in October.
A statement from the Foreign Ministry, cited by the Jordanian official news agency (Petra), said Jordan received the bodies of its citizens – Amer Qawas and Hosam Abu Ghazaleh – and handed them to their families for burial.
It added that the bodies were received via the King Hussein Bridge border crossing.
On Oct. 18, the Israeli army said it killed two gunmen for allegedly infiltrating from neighboring Jordan, south of the Dead Sea area. It added two soldiers were injured in an exchange of fire.
The Jordanian border with Israel and the West Bank stretches for 335 kilometers (208 miles), including 97 kilometers (60 miles) with the West Bank and 238 kilometers (147.8 miles) with Israel.
Both Jordan and Israel including the occupied West Bank are connected by three border crossings: Sheikh Hussein, Allenby Bridge and Wadi Araba, which typically operate regularly but have experienced limited closures due to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
The attack came amid regional tensions due to Israel’s brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 44,500 people, mostly women and children, following a Hamas attack last year.
On Nov. 21, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its actions in Gaza, which have drawn mounting international condemnation.
